When we are dreaming, we are in a specific stage of sleep called Rapid Eye Movement or REM sleep. There are different stages of sleep that we pass through in the night, and we cycle from light sleep to deep sleep multiple times during the night. We are most ready to wake up when we are in light sleep. It is harder for the body to wake up when you are in deep sleep (which is why the alarm clock is so annoying when you are in the middle of a dream!).
