      There is a normal variation in the ability to see in the dark just as there is with all of the things we do. But if the tissues surrounding the rods are diseased or if there is not enough Vitamin A then our night vision will be poor.

      To see in the dark we need healthy rod photoreceptors, these are cells that are very efficient at detecting light and signally even weak stimuli to the brain. The health and efficiency of these cells depends upon the surrounding tissues and the availability of a pigment called rhodopsin, which is derived from Vitamin A.
