I always wanted to try and figure out things I didn’t understand (and in some cases, things other people don’t understand yet either), and being a scientist is a great career choice to do this.

I have really. I’ve always been interested in biology and maths. I worked as an optician for many years where I had a chance to combine these two interests and then more recently I had a chance to become a professional scientist.

      Hi Emily,
I’ve always been very curious about things (in other words I’m very nosey!!) so it’s unsurprising that I became a scientist but when I was growing up I really wanted to become a vet then I changed my mind and wanted to be a sports physiotherapist instead! Human Biology was always my favourite subject at school and I was always interested in learning about how the body worked. I also worked as a beautician on and off for a few years and it’s something that I still enjoy keeping a hand in too. I always make sure I’m wearing my matching lippie and nail varnish in the lab!

When I was younger, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. When I started college, I thought I wanted to be a doctor. Then I started taking classes, and got very excited about how many things we didn’t know! When you’re in school, it seems like everything has already been figured out, but when you get to college & uni, it becomes clear that there is still a long way to go. Once I started doing research, I just got hooked!

No. I never really knew what I wanted to do with my life. I didn’t go to university straight from college but found a local job in a microbiology laboratory and I haven’t looked back!
