• Question: Whenever I get a checkup for my eyes to see if my vision is getting worse because I need glasses. I sit in a chair and my eye doctor shines a light into my eyes. She holds a thing on a string and tells me to look at it without moving my head just my eyes, she moves this left then right and up then down, while she does this t she inspects my eyes, why does she do this? Also, I see little white things floating around in the sides of my eyes what is this?

The string test sounds like a check for the coordination of the eye muscles, you would be best asking the eye doctor what she’s doing.

Floating things in the eyes are usually just slight imperfections in the jelly inside the eye. They are usually easiest see against a plain bright background. They are only a worry if you suddenly get a lot of them and you see flashes of light.
